Carbon Chip produces BioChar. BioChar refers to the carbon-rich materials (charcoal) produced from heating forest residue in a low oxygen environment.

Recently, there has been much interest in BioChar as soil amendments to improve and maintain soil fertility and to increase soil carbon sequestration.

The capacity to sequester carbon in the soil can be attributed to the relative stable nature and, therefore, long turnover time of biochar in soil and is of particular relevance to the solution of climate change.

Forage Farms is a family operation located south of Gympie in the beautiful Mary Valley.

Taken from Forage Farms’ website:

“The story behind Forage Farms begins in the Bylong Valley where three generations of Andrews have lived on “Tarwyn Park” the celebrated home of Natural Sequence Farming, as developed by Stuart’s father Peter Andrews. For over 40 years the family has been dedicated to understanding, practising and teaching methods of land rehabilitation. Natural Sequence Farming is used as a system of farming focused on implementing natural landscape functions back into degraded landscapes.

This continued with Stuart creating Tarwyn Park Training, a training program for landholders throughout Australia to attend and learn about Natural Sequence Farming and how it can be implemented into their landscapes.

As a way of broadening the understanding of Natural Sequence Farming, Forage Farms was born to merge food production with landscape restoration.

We added some foragers to the system to give us a helping hand in implementing natural landscape functions. Forage Farms is the home to pastured chickens and pigs along with grass-fed sheep and cattle. Our livestock quarter produce beautiful, fresh produce that is 100% nasties free with no artificial fertilisers and chemical free, ensuring the best for the animals, you and the environment.”

SPEAKER BIOS

David Lange ~ Auscrimper

David Lange and his son Charlie started the rural business, Auscrimper. For over a decade, the Lange family have been implementing Regenerative Agricultural Practises on their Queensland’s Darling Downs family farm.

Taken from Auscrimper website:

Regenerative Agricultural Practises includes the use of these sustainable techniques:

  • Cover cropping,

  • Time controlled rotational grazing,

  • High density grazing,

  • Pasture cropping.

David and Charlie have seen these practises result in long-term benefits for the sustainable productivity and regeneration of the landscape.

The benefits they see include:

  • improving water cycle,

  • improving carbon cycle,

  • increased carrying capacity,

  • better-quality soil & pasture health,

  • enhanced pasture & animal productivity,

  • superior plant & soil microbe diversity,

  • greater property drought resilience,

  • and a relaxed farmer.

David Lange says, “The success of our Regenerative Farming Techniques has led to the innovation of a variety of products to equip the landholder with appropriate tools and implements designed for Regenerative Agriculture.” Thus the Auscrimper Cover Crop Roller was born.

Randal Breen ~ Echo Valley Farm

Randal and his family run Echo Valley Farm, a 300 acre property in the Goomburra Valley, South East Queensland.

Randal and his family have developed, and continue to develop, a multi species integrated farming system that includes a range of enterprises such as cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs, hay/grain and seasonal small cropping.

Taken from Echo Valley Farm website - Ethical, sustainable, regenerative and holistic farming. What does it mean to us?

When establishing our farming operation at Echo Valley, sound and ethical ecological farming practices took priority. Thinking long on how we could integrate these approaches into our farm systems, we developed the ‘4 Good’ principles.

‘Good for the animal, good for the land, good for the farmer and good for you’.

These 4 values are integral to every industry on farm, with each farming enterprise at Echo Valley having been thoughtfully established to be in harmony and linked to the other on-farm systems, creating a farm that not only applies the 4 goods, but is holistic in its approach.

Andrew Zerner ~ RCS

With his Bachelor of Applied Science in Rural Management and as a graduate of ExecutiveLink, Andrew has a passion for the regenerative grazing principles he applies to his family farm. He brings this passion to teaching our Grazing Clinic, GrazingforProfit™ and Farming&GrazingforProfit™ Schools, advising producers on regenerative management and profitability and facilitating for the ExecutiveLink Program.

Andrew joined the RCS team on a part-time basis in 2015. Andrew and his wife Katie have been RCS clients since the late 1990s and are graduates of ExecutiveLink® and the RCS Pathway.

After completing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Rural Management through the University of Queensland, Andrew returned to the family farm where he ran a successful dairy operation with his parents near Murgon in the South Burnett.

Today, Andrew and Katie continue to live on the family property and run a beef trading enterprise. Andrew has a passion for the regenerative grazing principles that he practices daily, and brings this to his coaching, teaching and advisory roles within RCS. He loves working to help bring about positive change, where knowledge and appropriate management can reduce inputs and improve profitability and balance in people’s lives.

Anna Hughes ~ Lachlan Hughes Foundation

Anna grew up in the idyllic semi-rural area of the Samford Valley before taking herself off to a job in the far Southwest of Queensland on a remote cattle station for 12 months at the completion of high school.

Returning after her outback adventure to the University of Queensland in 2003 she studied a dual degree in Agribusiness and Animal Science, supporting herself through this degree as a chemistry tutor and feedlot pen rider. Receiving a reciprocal exchange scholarship to Texas A&M University in the USA gave her the opportunity to expand her world view and experience the difference in agriculture between cultures.

It was while at University that Anna met Lachlan, and on completion of her degree began their working life together, beginning with preparing yearlings for the Magic Millions on a thoroughbred stud near Scone, before the couple settled at the family property at Dulacca. Here they worked closely alongside each other in all aspects of the business and life.

Anna has a wide range of interests which throughout the years have included animal and human nutrition, home herbalism, an extensive home vegetable and herb garden, a Diploma in Equine Bowen Therapy, certifications in Equine Body Work, Natural Sequence Farming, Biodynamics, composting and soil health.

In late 2018, while pregnant with their 3rd child all this changed when Lachlan had a fatal on-farm accident, leaving the family in shock and deeply devastated. The Lachlan Hughes Foundation was created as a legacy to Lachlan’s commitment to better land management. The Foundation aims to support people who are motivated ‘to do’ and are ‘implementers of change’ and ‘champions for regenerative agriculture’.

A new Program was developed commencing in 2023 to provide training for at least six participants annually. The four module Program has workshops of two and half days each spaced throughout the year. Participants benefit from coaching in capacity building, personal development, project design and regenerative agriculture. Mentoring assists with the outcomes-based, on-farm regenerative agriculture project.

The aim is to grow leaders in regenerative agricultural practices and to support them to lead change in their industry and communities.

As a member of the selection panel for the Lachlan Hughes Foundation, Anna is this year participating as a reviewer in the newly formatted program with the view of ensuring the program meets the needs of up and coming leaders of the industry.

Hamish Andrews ~ Forage Farms

Hamish is a third-generation regenerative farmer. Hamish grew up on the 1500-acre property “Tarwyn Park”, the celebrated home of Natural Sequence Farming (NSF) pioneered by his grandfather Peter Andrews.

Hamish now spends his time between two businesses.

At Forage Farms, Hamish is the farm manager, where he overlooks the production of pasture-raised eggs, chicken and pork, and grass-fed beef.

In Tarwyn Park Training, he plays a pivotal role behind the scenes and is currently in training to become a full-time educator at the course.

Hamish is passionate about sharing his knowledge of food production and farming, along with assisting people in understanding how their landscape functions and how to implement NSF practices.

Shane Joyce ~ Kumbartcho Enterprises

Shane has been involved in what's now called "Regen Ag" for 49 years!

The names have varied over time, & include hippie, tree hugger, conservationist, sustainable, organic, biodynamic,  biological, alternative, & more!

He has played in many landscapes, & now owns and runs a farm at Kilkivan since 2014.

Here they play with biodynamics, Natural Sequence Farming,  Syntropic Agroforestry,  & Human Health!

Their aim is to run an agricultural system with zero external inputs, & as well zero external inputs for human health!

They have a focus on the "water element" in their landscape, & believe that water is the most limiting factor in our farming /gardening systems.

This has led him into both Natural Sequence Farming,  & Syntropic Agroforestry  as both place their focus on water.

Biodynamics are seen as a great tool to remind our land of its innate intelligence to function effectively, which it did before we came along.

Why the focus on human health?

Shane believes that our land will mirror our state of health, so it is important that those managing landscape have good health!

Victoria Kane ~ Winsland Park

Victoria grew up in a farming family in North Queensland and as did most country kids, was moved to the city to complete Secondary School. From the verandah of an inner-city apartment, the girl from the bush still managed to grow food, acquire a menagerie and teach her new city friends how to forage for food growing in their own backyards!

Victoria studied Food Promotion upon leaving school as the dream was to open her own chain of restaurants. That direction changed when she was offered the adventure of a lifetime (for an 18-year-old) and headed West to be the Cook on Bulloo Downs, a cattle station then owned by Stanbroke Pastoral. It was here she met her now husband Adam and together they headed off on a different adventure involving airlines and accumulating children.

Forward to today and Victoria continues to grow food and accumulate animals combined with being an Integrative Behavioural Nutritionist, markets K2 BEEF and ECO MEAT for Tim & Amber Scott as well as all the things that accompany mother and wife, all on the family farm in the Mary Valley. Victoria completed a Bachelor of Medical Science – Nutrition and inspired by the Microbiology lecturer, she has continued to expand her knowledge to work with the Human microbiome, gut health and mental health. In addition, working within the rural sector has enabled Victoria to apply her Microbiology to better understand soil health and the impacts on Human Health. The combination of Victoria’s roots in agriculture, her love of food, qualifications in Health and her ability to ‘keep it real’ enables her successfully work within all these industries at once.

Victoria brings together her lifetime of skills and knowledge to present how she as a Farmer can do more for human health than she can as a Nutritionist and introduces the mysterious and wonderous world of your Microbiome with tips to improve your physical and mental health.

Fergus Kane ~ Rattler Ringer

Fergus is an 18 year old farming enthusiast. He works on the Kandanga Farm doing a range of tasks, such as, fixing things, fencing, managing stock, etc.

He has been currently running a trial of animal grazing on the railway track alongside “Ecosse” at Amamoor. It aims to demonstrate the value and open the opportunity of grazing across the whole route of the Mary Valley Rattler as an economical, and more passive form of vegetation control.

Cattle grazing on the train line provides a passive, cost effective, environmentally friendly, and socially beneficial alternative to the current maintenance practice. Stock grazing the railway would mostly, if not completely eliminate the need for active vegetation maintenance of the train line. In turn, lowering the cost of the operation, environmentally, and economically. Furthermore, the use of cattle on the railway grants the producer larger grazing area’s which will be used to turn unwanted vegetation and grasses into nutrient dense, high-quality food which will support a healthy community.

Overall, the end goals of this trial are:

  • To if not decrease, eliminate the use of herbicides, as well as mechanical management along the track.

  • Measure the cost impact.

  • Measure the impact on the train service.

  • To assess the risks involved in this method off train line management and compare them to the risks involved with the current form of management. (Environmental, personal, economical).

Kane Dabbouss ~ Red Soil Organics

Kane is an unpretentious biodynamics guru. He creates and teaches how to make biodynamic compost, fermented potting blends, fermented mulch and creating biodynamic preparations. Kane runs workshops in Biodynamic preparation and raises awareness about the need to re-cultivate our overworked landscape and gives the knowledge and resources to do so.

Biodynamic compost is a type of compost that is made using specific methods that help to increase the fertility of the soil. It involves the use of special preparations and techniques such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and the use of manures and other natural sources of fertility. The result is a rich and nutrient-dense soil that provides the perfect environment for plants to thrive.

Yvonne Hennell ~ Gympie Landcare

Yvonne Hennell, Gympie & District Landcare’s Biological Services Manager spent twelve months trapping dung beetles and learning about the different introduced species on the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay District.  Yvonne will talk about the benefits of dung beetles, how to trap and ID them, how to look after your beetles, and the effects of chemical drenches.
